Holidays in San Candido
As the oldest municipality in South Tyrol, San Candido looks back on a long history. In 2019 the village in the holiday region 3 Zinnen in the Dolomites celebrated the 1250th year of its foundation by the Bavarian Duke Tassilo III. But already about 2000 years ago the Romans had settled here and built a road station. For 700 years the municipality in the Alta Pusteria Valley has been holding markets. Today San Candido lies at the intersection of two cultures and presents itself with all the merits of a small town. Our 4-star hotel is located in the traffic-free town centre. The way to the ski runs, cross-country trails, hiking and cycling paths is no further than the way to the cathedral. How can all this not worth a holiday in San Candido in the Dolomites?
San Candido in the Dolomites, UNESCO World Heritage Site
San Candido is located in the Three Peaks Nature Park, in an area of the Dolomites that was listed as a World Natural Heritage Site in 2009; it is the highest recognition a mountainous region may receive. The unique landscapes and the famous peaks – foremost the Three Peaks – in the Park and the Dolomites are fascinating. Hiking around this area is not overly challenging, but climbing the peaks should be attempted only by very expert mountaineers.

THE FASCINATION OF BAROQUE AND ROMANESQUE ART
The Collegiate Church of San Candido is the most important example of Romanesque architecture in the Eastern Alps. Construction began in the mid-12th Century and concluded in 1280 ca., as we see it today. The crucifix group within, dating back to 1250 ca., is considered a masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture.
